How Plymouth can become a social media powerhouse

with 4 comments

It’s clear to us that most of the people who come along to our events love Plymouth. But we also have discussions about how we could make the city better. Unsurprisingly everyone who comes along seems to love social media too! And we often discuss what we can do to get others involved. But could we think really big? Can we turn our love for Plymouth and social media into something amazing? Whether we use social media as individuals, businesses, charities, community groups, or the public sector (ok – this is currently rare in Plymouth!) we could all do something to make Plymouth a social media powerhouse.

For the first of our new discussion events Ash Mashadi (@inplymouth) from inplymouth.com will be challenging us all to think big about social media – and we’ll be thinking about what we can do turn Plymouth into a social media powerhouse.

Be at the start of something big – help to define the conversation – and join us…

  • Where: Stanley Casino
  • When: Wednesday 27th April – bar open from 6, discussion starts at 6.30
We look forward to seeing you there

January 2010 date and venue announced

leave a comment »

The first Devon Social Media Cafe of 2010 will be held on Tuesday 26 January at View 2, Plymouth at 6.30pm. The event will kick-off at 7pm.

At this month’s meeting we will be discussing ideas for a Plymouth Twestival in March 2010.

Twestival is a charity fund-raising event organised using social media. The 2010 global event is raising money for Concern, a charity that is heavily involved in helping victims of the Haiti earthquake. We hope to organise a Plymouth event, alongside other South West organisations and would like to use this month’s DSMC to brainstorm ideas.

We’ll also reveal plans for upcoming DSMC events and how you can get involved.

So, lots of exciting things coming up in 2010. Look forward to seeing you all there!

And as always, any questions or suggestions do get in touch…

VIP guests expected at Devon Social Media Cafe launch tomorrow

leave a comment »

Devon Social Media Cafe meets for the first time tomorrow (Tuesday 15 September) in Plymouth and among the VIP guests expected at the inaugural event are Leader of Plymouth City Council, Councillor Vivien Pengelly, and Shadow Leader of Plymouth City Council, Councillor Tudor Evans, who is a prolific user of social media websites such as Twitter.

Aren Grimshaw, one of the organisers of the Cornwall Social Media Cafe will also be speaking about the Cornish Twestival, a charity event organised by social media users that took place on Saturday which managed to raise over £2,500 for local charity CHICKS.

Devon Social Media Cafe has been set up by public relations consultants PR Dogs Limited after they were asked to advise a number of business groups on the best ways to use social media.

Director John Taynton said: “We are delighted by the enthusiastic response there has been from businesses and organisations to the formation of the Devon Social Media Cafe. Social media is a very valuable part of the marketing mix but people are often unsure of how to make the best use of it.

“Devon Social Media Cafe will allow companies and individuals to exchange ideas and formulate best practice. I do hope businesses and other organisations will find it useful.”

The event is tomorrow (Tuesday) at Bar HaHa in Plymouth, from 6.30pm onwards. Spaces are still available and there is no charge but anyone wanting to attend is asked to reserve a place online at: http://devonsocialmediacafe.eventbrite.com/ or telephone 01822 600100.
